How do I get over the guilt that I caused my Mom to sever ties with her father (my grandfather) for 7 years?

I feel her family must think less of us now (we see them a little but not a lot).

Demetrius:
In reality he was very kind when not drinking when I got to know him as a teen and adult (he even recovered towards the end). When drunk though he was an angry drunk (non-violent). So how do I get over this guilt as I feel it was due to my birth.

My Mom was too angry about the alcoholism but as a kid I believed everything she said like that he was incapable of loving anyone.

While we got to know him when we were older (he has since died) we are not as close to our cousins on her side of the family as they are to each other (they were allowed to see him). I feel great guilt and embarrassment about this also.

If she hadn't had my siblings and I then she wouldn't have done this.

Edit Her father was an alcoholic and so she severed ties with him saying she was protecting us kids.
